Marvin & Alice Whittington opened the Golden W Motel and Restaurant in 1953 and sold it a few years later. Subsequent owners included Mr. & Mrs . C. W. Bryan followed by Belva & Katie Miller followed by others later. It eventually became the Budget Inn shown in this 2015 photo.

The Whittingtons built or owned a number of motels in Tucumcari including the Golden W Motel, the Sahara Sands Motel, the Pony Soldier Motel, and the La Cita Restaurant,
