The former Golden Spread Motel was built in 1953 and operated as a motel until the mid-1980s. It is now a self-storage facility. The building could have had a role in the 1992 movie "Leap of Faith" starring Steve Martin but the owners passed up the opportunity. The second postcard shown below shows both the swimming pool and the cafe across the street. The pool was added sometime before 1961. The low wall towards the right in this photo was the base of the fence around the pool.

The two postcards shown below show the difference in signs used over the years. The arrow on the sign in the second postcard was either moved to the L.A. Motel for the movie or replicated for that site.

In March of 1962 Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Metcalf from Amarillo bought the Golden Spread from Mr. and Mrs. Pete Ford.

GOLDEN SPREAD MOTEL AND GRILL
GROOM, TEXAS
ON U. S. HIGHWAY 66 - 45 miles east of Amarillo

Heated swimming pool, 22 new units, individual refrigerated air conditioned sound proof, excellent food, wall-to-wall carpet, tile baths with tub and shower, T.V. in rooms. Ph. 2101

NOTE: The first postcard is from the mid-50s and the second from the early 1960s. OK these two cards are a least 8 years apart, so still boasting about "new units" was probably a bit overly enthusiastic. The early 60s postcard includes a phone number for the motel.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
