The Dutch Mill Service Station and Cafe operated in this little building from 1932 until at least the late 1950s. To attract passing motorists, it originally featured a large Dutch windmill at its curbside. When we went by it was home to the Emerald Poodle dog grooming business. This building housed both the service station and the cafe until 1950 when the cafe moved next-door into a larger building. A newspaper ad in 1966 listed the cafe contents as being up for auction, but it might have closed before that. Dutch Mill was a nationwide chain of gas stations, cafe and often motels.

This building is part of the U.S. Route 66-Sixth Street Historic District that is on the National Register of Historic Places.

xKind of a cool looking sign, but certainly no commotion for what the original Windmill style sign would have looked like.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
