The 1926 Carolina Building is an example of Spanish Colonial Revival architecture.
The building is an early example of a small "strip" commercial
building in Amarillo. The building is 80 x 100 feet and has eight storefronts
separated by brick columns. A newspaper article celebrating the buildings
completion and grand opening list the Central Barber & Beauty Shop
and the J. W. Kemp Auto Painting Company among initial tenants. During
the Great Depression sidewalks in front of this building were constructed
by the PWA (Public Works Administration).
There is a mural, on the east end of the building. There is an interesting
sign on Gray's Studio storefront that says Grays' and "Since 1910".
The 1910 part is right under the "S' in Gray's. That has to refer
to their business history and not how long at this address, because
this building wasn't built until 1926. The building is part of the U.S.
Route 66 Sixth Street Historic District listed on the National Register
of Historic Places.

You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane
road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned
lanes are still there.
