Adkinson-Baker Tire & Texaco Station
3200 SW Sixth Ave., Amarillo, TX
Phone:
The Adkinson-Baker Tire Company building looks very much like it did when
it was built in 1939. They sold Texaco gas and the building has typical
architectural features shared with other Texaco station of the period
such as the Art Moderne style curved corners on the canopy.
Adkinson-Baker sold the building in 1945 after which it became the
T. A. Bippus Service Station. It was being used as an oil change shop
when we went by in 2012.
The
station featured a single row of incandescent lights and a single band
of neon lights outlining the canopy as show here. It is part of the
U.S. Route 66-Sixth Street Historic District that is on the National
Register of Historic Places.
