The single screen Stovall Theater opened in June 1950. This was a large theater for western Oklahoma having between 800 or more seats It was the third theater owned by George Stovall, the Rio and the Ute being the other two. The Stovall converted to a wide screen format and added the ability to show CinemaScope films in 1954. The Rio had already closed and apparently the Ute closed not long after the Stovall opened.

The Stovall eventually closed and waited for restoration. Compare the two photos on this page to see what renovation on Route 66 looks like. What a difference a couple years make! 2015 above, 2012 below.

xThe theatre is located at 210 E. Main St. It opened in 1950 with Art Deco styling inside. Over 20 years ago there was a fire but the Sayre Main Street Program purchased the building around 2005/6 and is renovated it to become a community performing arts theatre.

The bucking bronco at the top of the neon sign was animated in the original 1950 version. I don't know if this is the restored original sign or a replica, either way it looks great..

There is some ghost writing on the side of the building.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
