The old Sayre Hotel across the street from the Beckham County Courthouse was a a bail bond office with a tall mansard style awning on the front hiding the second floor when we snapped this photo in 2019. See Matchbook image. The hotel dates back to 1923 when it was built by John Boatman to be operated by Boatman & Wray. By 1929 the hotel was owned solely by B. P. Wray who added 12 rooms to the back of the building. That gave the hotel a total of 36 rooms.

In the fall of 1941 the hotel was remodeled to serve as the Girls Residence of the local branch of the National Youth Administration. The NYA was a youth training program geared to the wartime emergency. Apparently only the NYA girls would live there, but the NYA boys could come by for their meals. The program came to an end in Sayre in the summer of 1943.

Soon after the NYA program ended B. P. Wray put the hotel up for sale in 1943 and in the spring of 1944 Mr. and Mrs. Mack Hastings purchased the hotel, completely redecorated and reopened it. Soon after that they installed a neon sign out front. They operated the hotel until selling it to Mr. and Mrs. H. M. Carter in early 1959.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
