Beckham County Courthouse
302 East Main St., Sayre, OK
Phone
This wonderful building is the Beckham County Courthouse which was built
in 1911. Check out that awsuome dome with the clocks, one on each side
of the dome, which is supported by twelve Doric columns. This stately
courthouse played the state capital in "The Grapes of Wrath"
movie because the Oklahoma State Capitol
did not have a dome at the time. This courthouse was listed in the National
Register of Historic Places in 1984.
Looking east on Main Street from Route 66 you can't miss the courthouse,
which is one of only a few county courthouses in Oklahoma to have a
dome. Main curves around it to the left in this photo.
This
little fellow is the "Spirit of the West" by the artist Bill
Cothran. It was dedicated in 2007 and sponsored by the Shortgrass Museum
and the American Legion Post #146.
There
is also a monument to veterans of all wars.
