Beckham County Courthouse

302 East Main St., Sayre, OK
Phonex

East < GO > West

This wonderful building is the Beckham County Courthouse which was built in 1911. Check out that awsuome dome with the clocks, one on each side of the dome, which is supported by twelve Doric columns. This stately courthouse played the state capital in "The Grapes of Wrath" movie because the Oklahoma State Capitol did not have a dome at the time. This courthouse was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.

x Looking east on Main Street from Route 66 you can't miss the courthouse, which is one of only a few county courthouses in Oklahoma to have a dome. Main curves around it to the left in this photo.

This little fellow is the "Spirit of the West" by the artist Bill Cothran. It was dedicated in 2007 and sponsored by the Shortgrass Museum and the American Legion Post #146.

There is also a monument to veterans of all wars.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
