The beautiful State Capitol of Oklahoma didn't just pop up over night. Construction started in 1914 and ended about three years later in 1917. But even that wasn't the end because the dome wasn't constructed until 2002.

The original architects were Solomon Layton and S. Wemyss Smith and their original plans were used in renovations in 1993 and 1999 to return the building to its former elegance.

They have a nice self-guided tour which we enjoyed.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
