Sayre Champlin Gas Station
126 W Main, Sayre, OK
Phone:
The Art Moderne style Sayre Champlin Gas Station was built in 1934 and
included only the service bays and single door and window. That was because
it was built next to a smaller service station that was located at a diagonal
to the corner. When the older station was taken down in 1937 the part
of the newer building with the large display window and diagonal entrance
was added.
The original business in the older 1923 station was owned by the Prince
Brothers but they sold it to Champlin Refining Company in 1928. The
old station sold gas and the new station service bays did repairs. After
1937 the old station demolished the new one expanded to look like the
other Champlin stations.
Route
66 was realigned away from Main St. in 1958 and instead continued south
on 4th street and by 1967 the Champlin Station was sold and out of the
automotive business.
I
love these details on this building. It was placed on the NRHP in 2004.
Sadly
in 2019 we noticed some broken windows a seriously deteriorating roof.
The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in
2004 so lets hope the deterioration can be stopped.
