Ralph Kobel built the largely Southwestern Mission Revival style Y Service Station and Cafe that was constructed in the mid-1930s at the wye where US 183 split with the 1926 - 1956 alignment of Route 66, 183 heading south and Route 66 curving west. It was part of the Neptune Court complex which included a motel, as well as a gas station and cafe. The motel building was torn down in the early 1990s.

The blue tile awnings on the two story station and cafe building were originally brown, but have been painted. The gas station was in the two story section, the service bay was in the middle with a large garage door flanked by tall windows (where the small window without an awning is) and the cafe was on the right under the long blue metal awning in this photo. The three windows in the cafe portion replaced six smaller windows and an entrance door. The service bay in the middle had an garage door on both sides of the building. When this photo was taken in 2012 the building was being used as a used car dealership. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
