1315 W. Route 66, Tucumcari, NM
The Buckaroo Motel was built on the west side of Tucumcari in the late
1950s and purchased by Ruby and Stanley Jennings in 1963. Stanley died
in 1975 but Ruby continued to run the motel until 2004 when she sold it.
That was actually the second sale, the first in 1993 resulted in Ruby
getting the motel back. The motel appears to have grown over the years
having started with ten units and adding more as time went on. According
to the 1959/60 AAA Tour Book you could spend the night here for between
$6.00 andf 8.00, you could rent a TV for a little more.
This sign was installed later, the Buckaroo Motel lettering is lit
with neon, the yellowish section has incandescent lighting. It's hard
to see in this image but there is a 3D cowboy on a bucking bronco on
the redish round section above Buckaroo. The original sign was nice
but not nearly as eye catching as this one.
