Moriarty's Ist Fire Station Building

777 Route 66, Moriarty, NM
Phone:

East < GO > West

This building was Moriarty's first fire station and the "Moriarty Fire Dept" lettering is partially visible behind the New Mexico Workforce sign.

xIt kind of looks like the "Moriarty Fire Dept" lettering is inset in the stone, hard to tell for sure from this photo though, This photo was snapped in 2013 the newer sign now says New Mexico Workforce.

There's a cool mural on the east side of the building. It points out that Moriarty sits on the "Retribution Road" a knick name for the post 1937 alignment of Route 66 from Santa Rosa to Albuquerque. A common and often told story is that the realignment was the result of some politcal fuss in the state capital at Santa Fe. Whatever was behind the realignment it did cut about 100 miles off Route 66 in New Mexico.

This mural is part of the RETRO-Relive the Route project funded by the New Mexico MainStreet program. The artist of this mural is Paul Harmon of nearby Edgewood.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
