East < GO > West

As you approach Atlanta from the north the road makes a gentle curve to the left onto the 1947 bypass. Soon after that curve starts you enter Atlanta by turning west (right) onto Sycamore St.

xAs Sycamore curves left onto NE Arch St. you'll see this Welcome to Atlanta sign. That's where you turn right onto a short section of the old road running northeast a block or so and ending at a gravel parking/turn around area just past the driveway to a private home.

xThere is a Wayside Exhibit at the parking area.

x Leaving the parking area and continuing on Arch St. takes you right through downtown Atlanta. The downtown is split in two by the railroad tracks. The former Palms Grill Cafe, the Giant Hot Dog Mufflerman statue and other landmarks are on the east side of the tracks. There are also a couple of points of interest on the west side of the tracks, such as the old bank the Colaw Rooming House and the Hawes Elevator.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
