The 1930 El Gran Garage is a clear-span truss building with foot thick concrete walls that housed the Fred Harvey cars used to shuttle Harvey House guests around town as well as on regional tours. It was the local headquarters for the Harvey Car tours. These included the Indian Detours and the Off the Beaten Path tours that visited the American Indian Lands, the Painted Desert and the Grand Canyon from this base in Winslow.

Service stations and garages were often built with large canopies or roofed areas over the drive to keep the customers and their cars out of the hot sun and the one at the El Gran is quite large. The garage is located just across the street from the La Posada Hotel and Amtrak Station.

The El Gran offered a lot more than a place for the La Posada to park their cars. In the 1932/33 phonebook the El Gran was also listed as a garage offering "Complete 24 Hour One Stop Service" with steam heat. The 1938/39 book lists the garage as offering Chrysler Plymouth sales and service. The July 1940 book lists the them as an authorized Buick dealer using the tag line "When Better Automobiles Are Built, Buick Will Build Them". In some years the listing also included storage as a service that was offered.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
