East < GO > West

About 5 miles west of I-40 Exit 139 on Crookton Rd you come to a section of the 1920's - 1932 road that went around a hill instead of over it. It's a little rough, but we didn't have a trouble driving it in dry weather. It goes off to the north side of the road. The west end of the old road is about a mile east of the Crookton Junction Bridge over the railroad tracks.

GPS: 35.276014, -112.689965

xThe newer road goes over the hill instead of around it. If you go over the hill (why not do both?) there is a scenic pull out near the crest that looks out past the old road below.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
