About 5 miles west of I-40 Exit 139 on Crookton Rd you come to a section
of the 1920's - 1932 road that went around a hill instead of over it.
It's a little rough, but we didn't have a trouble driving it in dry weather.
It goes off to the north side of the road. The west end of the old road
is about a mile east of the Crookton Junction Bridge over the railroad
tracks.

The
newer road goes over the hill instead of around it. If you go over the
hill (why not do both?) there is a scenic pull out near the crest that
looks out past the old road below.

About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more

You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane
road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned
lanes are still there.
