East < GO > West

N. R. Dunton built the original Cool Springs in 1925/6. There were at least two cabins on the east side (right side in this photo) and possibly more on the west side. The rock facing on the main building was added after new owners took over in 1936. The ownership changed a few more times before the business was abandoned in the mid 60s before it burned down in 1966. Business no doubt took a big drop after the four-lane Route 66 bypass through Yucca opened in 1952.

The current Cool Springs gas station and cafe building has been built to closely replicate the original that is long gone, as are the cabins and other buildings.

There's a very nice sign on top of the building. There also used to be a popular restaurant here.

Three old Mobil gas pumps stand between the columns out front. Two of the pumps are the old visible gravity fed style. The pump in the middle is a newer style.

The Mobil Pegasus can be found on the side of the building.

Vintage Advertising Highlights

NOTE: Judging by the car in the photo this postcard appears to be from the late 1930s or early 1940s. It's interesting that the postcard doesn't mention the availability of gas or cabins and only refers to the business as a "Tourist Mart". The photo does show a couple of interesting sign though, one being "No Tolls Loaned", once you've driven this section of Route 66 you'll clearly understand the significance of that. Another sign on the building says " Air Cooled" and "Cold Drinks", both probably welcome sights for early Route 66 travelers.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
