The Hi-Line Motel opened in 1936 as the Hi-Line Modern Auto Court. Years ago the motel office in the center of the U shaped motel also served as a Shell gas station as seen on the postcard shown below. The pumps went when the road was widened in the 1950s and the station was converted to an office and residence. That is also when the name changed to the Hi-Line Motel. This was one of several motels on Route 66 in Ash Fork.

x The Hi-Line name is outlined in neon while the Motel is in a backlit sign can.

We frequently mention how vintage motel guest rooms were often separated by garages and this was the case at the Hi-Line. This photo shows the garage openings. The end unit on the left in this photo has a number 17 next to the door.

xThis photo is looking west as you approach the Hi-Line Motel on the south side of the street.

Vintage Advertising Highlights

The back of the postcard reads:

HI-LINE MOTEL
Ashfork, Arizona

Located close to the junction of Hiways 66-89 & New Interstate 40 - Clean Modern Rooms with Reasonable Prices - Inspection Always Invited - Wall-to-Wall Carpeting - TV - Refrigeration -Kitchenettes - also Available. Only 20 Miles to Grand Canyon. Restaurants and Car Service nearby.

NOTE: Neither of these postcards are dated, but the second one refers to I-40 in the location. It's interesting that the first postcard advertises Cottages while the style of the building is more like a motel with several units in each building. The second postcard doesn't show the AAA sign, that' not really a good indicator of quality.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
