Flagstone Sidewalks
Lewis Ave. and 1st St., Ash Fork, AZ
Phone:
These flagstone sidewalks are a reminder that the early history of Route
66 included the years of the Great Depression. During those years the
US government ran a program called the WPA (the Works Progress Administration)
which built public works projects all over the country as a way of providing
employment. In Ash Fork, that included these sidewalks. Over 75 years
later the tough little sidewalks are still being walked on by the citizens
of Ash Fork and others.
There
is another example a few blocks west on Lewis next to the Ash Fork Hardware
building.
Plaque
at both locations commemorate the 1936 - 39 WPA project that built the
sidewalks.
The sidewalk pictured above is located next to the 1930s First Southern
Baptist Church at Lewis Ave. and 1st Street.
There
is also a stone sidewalk next to the 1922 Drug Store which later the
Ash Fork Hardware Store at 401 Lewis Ave.
