East < GO > West

These flagstone sidewalks are a reminder that the early history of Route 66 included the years of the Great Depression. During those years the US government ran a program called the WPA (the Works Progress Administration) which built public works projects all over the country as a way of providing employment. In Ash Fork, that included these sidewalks. Over 75 years later the tough little sidewalks are still being walked on by the citizens of Ash Fork and others.

xThere is another example a few blocks west on Lewis next to the Ash Fork Hardware building.

xPlaque at both locations commemorate the 1936 - 39 WPA project that built the sidewalks.

x The sidewalk pictured above is located next to the 1930s First Southern Baptist Church at Lewis Ave. and 1st Street.

xThere is also a stone sidewalk next to the 1922 Drug Store which later the Ash Fork Hardware Store at 401 Lewis Ave.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
