East < GO > West

The mid-20s Copper State Motel has cobblestone walls that are 18 inches thick. The gas station and store came first in the mid 1920s and the motel units were finished in 1928. It took four years to build the 12 unit motel one cobblestone at a time.

It was first known as the Copper State Modern Cottages and later as the Copper State Motor Court and finally as the Copper State Motel. The gas station and store building had a large canopy over the pump island in front of the building.

The canopy and pumps became history when Lewis Avenue was widened through town in the 1950s to accommodate the heavy traffic along the Mother Road.. The original owners, Ezell and Zelma Nelson operated the motel until 1975. It's still operating under different ownership.

Here's a little better look at the stonework. The little flat awnings above the guest room doors have replaced the original gable style. The "L" shaped guest room building wraps around behind a building that was built in 1924 and served as a Standard Oil gas station at one time. Originally some of the motel rooms were separated by carports which also had railings to tie your horse. When the motel was built it was a multi-modal time transportation wise.

The main sign for the motel is a bit tangled in the trees.

xComing from the east, this is the first sign for the motel.

Note: It's interesting that this postcard shows the whole motel building, but not the office/store/station/residence building in the courtyard. I'm guessing it's more of an artists interpretation rather than an accurate image. It includes an image of what looks like a 1954 Oldsmobile.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
