The good people of Shamrock spent $6,560 to build this 75,000 gallon water tower in 1915. Built by the Chicago Bridge and Iron Company of Chicago and standing 172+ feet tall it is still the tallest of its kind in the state. Until then water had been hauled around town in buckets and barrels so the water tower represented real progress in the development of the town. It is listed as a Texas Recorded Historical Landmark.

I suppose a town named Shamrock can be expected to have a St. Patrick's Day celebration, this one does, and the very thought makes me want to head there to join the party! It was during the celebration in 2009 they dedicated the Water Tower Plaza on the west side of Main Street at at Railroad Avenue.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
