This is the 1963 and current version of the former Herb Martin's Phillips 66 Station. It replaced the original 1930 cottage style station on this site. The soaring triangular canopy and angled service bays should be familiar to most Baby Boomers in the USA, it appeared on similar stations wherever Phillips 66 gas was sold.

In the early 50s very the station gave out Scottie (trading) Stamps with purchases. The stamps could be used to buy merchandise at Montgomery Ward store in Amarillo. Scottie was similar to Gold Bond and S & H trading stamps. Alas the free trading stamps at Martin's Phillips 66, and about 40 other gas stations in Amarillo, came to an end on June 1, 1952, apparently the stamp program was to costly for the stations to continue.

The station is located at 3821 SW 6th Ave. It is part of the U.S. Route 66-Sixth Avenue Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
