1933 Captain Creek Bridge

Highway 66B, Wellston, OK
Phone:

East < GO > West

Wellston is located on the Ozark Trails and what was part of Route 66 from 1928-1933. The bridge was built in 1933 when the road was paved. At about the same time Route 66 was realigned to the south bypassing the town and the road running through Wellston was renamed 66B.

This was a huge fight between the state and the county and town. There were several lawsuits spanning several years attempting to keep Route 66 running right through Wellston as it did in 1926. The town eventually did get bypassed in 1933 but they also got the old dirt/gravel road through town paved so it connects on both ends with the bypass alignment. No doubt the prolonged legal battle that led to the new bridge and eventual paving of the road through town saved Wellston from becoming a complete ghost town.

The bridge is 225 feet long in total and the Camelback truss is 100 feet long. The bridge was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
