Western Capri Motel

The Western Capri Motel opened in 1950 on what was then Sapulpa Road and is now West Skelly Dr. At the time this road was Route 66. Like so many other vintage motels this one has filled in the old swimming pool. It's very common for a motel name to change with new owners but this one still uses the original name, which is pretty cool. That said, the signage says daily and weekly rates, which often indicates a change from a tourist oriented business to a more long term rental focus.

The original sign was scrapped and destroyed in 2006 and replaced with this rather non-descript version.

Note: It's interesting that the postcard that was probably two or three years earlier than the matchbook didn't mention the restaurant. There is no mention of a swimming pool, which is odd since they had one and it would have been considered a major draw at the time. The "Room Temperature at your immediate control" line seems oddly worded, a simpler "Individually controlled heat and a/c" would have been more conventional.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
