This motel was advertised as "Sayre's Newest and Finest Motor Hotel" for many years. Paul & Pat Bixler held the Grand Opening of their 20 unit "ultra modern" "colonial style" new motel on August 30, 1959. Mr.& Mrs. Bill Feller and later John Shattuck were among the owners over the years. By the time we went by it was more of an apartment building. In the mid-60s a couple could rent a room for $7.00 to 12.00.

x There is nothing distinctive about the modern sign that has replaced a very cool old neon sign. As the sign indicates, the motel is now long term apartments. Actually the motel went through at least four sign changes over the years.

The first sign featured a stylized star surrounding the Stardust Motel name. The next and most flamboyant featured a pair of arms soaring skyward spearing through the ends of a large signboard that carried the name. Above the name between the two spears were seven stars atop this tube supports. The word Restaurant appeared below the name on a bright yellow signboard. In the 1970s the two tall spears no longer still rose from the base but extended above the motel name and the were only five stars above the name. That brings us to the sign shown above.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
