This is one of many place along historic Route 66 where an old alignment or part of one runs right along side the current alignment. In some places these abandoned lanes are now on private property.

In 1955-56 the 1929 alignment of Route 66 went from two lanes to four from Sayre to the Texas state line. At some time, after 1975, the four lane section about 4 west of Sayre through Hext to just before I-40 reverted to a two lane highway. It may become part of a bike trail.
