An earlier version of the Sayre City Park at this location was largely washed away in a flood in 1923. In 1940 the WPA did some landscaping and construction including what became one of the main attractions, the swimming pool and bath house.

Route 66 originally crossed the river using the 9th Street bridge and ran on the west side of the park and most of the old road is still derivable. In 1957 a flood washed out the 9th Street bridge and Route 66 was realigned the following year to run on east side of the park using a new bridge on 4th Street.

Coming from downtown Sayre, take the first turn west (W. Kennemer) after you cross the river the get to the 1926 alignment. When you leave the park you can take the old road south to meet the newer 1929 - 1970 alignment which serves as the north frontage road for I-40.

xThe main entrance to the bath house is through this arched doorway. Men would be directed one way and women the other way I'm not sure what the Dutch door in the center was for unless an attendant handed towels or tickets there.

xThis was a good size pool and there is a smaller wading pool for little children.

xA very cool stairway leads to the rooftop sundeck as it winds its way around the tower.

x This bronze plaque is located above the entrance to the bath house, it reads "USA, 1940, WPA, Oklahoma.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
