East < GO > West

Coming from the east on 1931 - 1956 alignment of Route 66 it's very easy to miss the ruins of Kobel's Garage, this photo actually makes it look easier to spot than it is. There is a 4 way stop at this intersection. The Kobel's name can be seen above the window in this photo. This is the east side of the building and it faces the 1926 alignment of the Mother Road. You could follow this road south about 1/4 mile to I-40.

x It's little easier to spot the building coming from the west. Beside gas and auto repairs there was a cafe here that also served a Greyhound Bus stop. This is the front of the building and it faces the 1931- 1956 alignment of Route 66, the first paved in this area.

x This would have been the cafe, but there isn't much more than the walls still standing here, but I can't help wondering about all the travelers that stopped here for food, gas or mechanical problems with their early cars.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
