The Fort has its own cemetery for those who passed on while serving here. Their families were also able to be buried here.

During WWII the fort served as a POW Camp housing German and Italian prisoners of war. There is a dedicated section of the cemetery for the POWs who died during during their stay in such camps in the USA. There were 24 camps of various sizes spread around Oklahoma and the southwest, together they held something like 20,000 POWs over the course of the war. My understanding is that most of the POWs buried here died in other camps.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
