It's fun when you find a serene wooded section of the old road like this. About a mile east of Arcadia take the road to the left (E. Old Hwy. 66), you'll rejoin the newer Route 66 at Hiwassee Rd.

East GPS: 35.659864, -97.289945
West GPS: 35.666867, -97.300132

This is the only surviving section of original concrete and asphalt "Modified Bates Type" roadbed built to then current Oklahoma State Highway Commission standards in 1928. The east end used pure Portland Concrete but the west end used a two inch asphalt surface over a five inch concrete base. This section of road was added to thee National Register of Historic Places in 1999.

xShortly after starting down this section there is a culvert that goes under the newer road, I haven't explored it to find out why.

There is a concrete Oklahoma F.A.P. (Federal Aid Project) marker inscribed with data for each road project. This marker stands where two road construction projects met. The east project was a concrete surface, the west was built with an asphalt surface on top of a concrete base.

This one tells us that this section of the road was built in 1929 and is 4.377 miles long. That mile count includes more than the short section currently call E. Old Hwy 66. There are two similar plaques on this post, one for each section of the project, this is the more legible.

The marker located about 3/10 of a mile from the east end of old 66 and is nearly hidden by the greenery so it's easy to miss.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
