The Tower Motel was built in 1949. An early postcard included the following very cool invitation.

"Stop here a few days in the City of Natural Lakes at the Gateway to the Land of Enchantment - where the Conquistador Coronado crossed the Rio Pecos in his explorations over 400 years ago"

x The Googie styled sign spells out TOWER in capital letters on alternating blue and white blocks. I'm guessing the name may have come from the water towers behind the motel. Originally there were garages between the guest rooms, those are long gone, that kind of space became too valuable and was often converted to additional guest rooms.

Note: The "invitation quoted under the first photo is one of the most enticing things I've read on a postcard. It makes the difference in promotional text between the early and mid-60s postcards pretty stark.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
