This was the Whiting Brothers Gas Station #78 for some years. They apparently
bought the station from a previous owner about the time that I-40 opened.
Route 66 is the north frontage road here. There isn't much more public
commerce in Newkirk than this station. The current post office is attached
to the gas station which is located at the intersection of Route 66 and
NM 129 just north of the I-40, exit 330.
There used to be a Humble Oil Company gas station just east of this
station. That station has apparently been demolished and replaced by
something other than a gas station.

You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane
road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned
lanes are still there.
