Escolastico 'Esqui' Mazon founded the Monte Carlo Restaurant in the late 1940s and operated the it for 50 years or so. Opening when it did, just before the discovery of uranium in the area in 1951 and the consequent rush of arriving miners, was probably as good as timing could get.

A kind of fun fact is that in the mid-50s the restaurant sponsored Gene Osborn's Locker Room sports news and interviews show on Channel 13 KGGM-TV from Albuquerque.

The cafe closed years ago and was a photography studio when we snapped these photos in 2019.

xThe old sign can is still in use but has been relettered to simply say Monte Carlo. The sign on the roof of the building has a tag line that says Monte Carlo Studio.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
