The 40 room El Capitan Motel was opened in the mid 1950s. More than a decade later they were still advertising the place as having 40 "new" rooms. I don't know, maybe they meant newly redecorated.

As far as I can tell the original sign was replaced sometime in the early 1960s. The sign shown here is at least the third version.
