Lester's Conoco Station

Route 66

East < GO > West

This is the former site of Lester's Conoco Station with one of his 1950's gas pumps. The site has been determined to be eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places according to a 2010 I-40 Corridor Location Study..

xThere was an old bicycle chained to the gas pump when we stopped by in 2019. A little breeze had Old Glory all a flutter. I'm not sure if this is the actual old Conoco station building or a replacement.

xA bit farther back on the property was this cool display of license plates from all eight Route 66 states and more. In 2017 there was an plan to build a much larger wall of license plates here, but that apparently didn't work out so the wall reportedly moved to the side of a 40 foot semi trailer at the Lewis Antique and Toy Museum in Moriarty.

xRegular gas was 29.9 cents a gallon last time this vintage gas pump had a job. It's apparently been retired for many years! The manufacturer was Tokheim, and the name shows on the stainless steel band at the top of the pump as well as right under the price.

xI have no idea what this piece of machinery is, but I'm always fasinated to find stuff like it standing around.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
