Originally known as the El Camino Lodge & Dining Room the name of this motel has changed over the years first becoming the El Camino Motor Hotel, which the sign still shows, and lastly the El Camino Motel.

This was one of several tourist courts on original alignmrnt of 1926 Route 66 on the north side of Albuquerque prior to the 1937 realignment and it's the only one still operating. When it was new it seems to have had less than 20 units most separated by double carports. That changed later when the carports converted to guest rooms increasing the number of rooms to 30. The conversion of the carports apparently happened sometime in the late 1940s or early 50s. The fence on the right in the photo above surrounds the swimming pool.

xThe office, lobby and second floor owner or managers apartment is in the building in the center of the courtyard.

xThe current neon sign needed a attention when we went by in 2019. It replaced the much lower and more modest original version.

xThe El Camino Dining Room is still operating across the road from the motel.

xThe dining room sign bears a strong resmblance to the current motel sign.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
