The cottage style Rex Smith Oil Company Station opened in 1932 as a Flying
A Station and Cafe with tourist cabins out back. What a neat Ozark sandstone
cottage style station. It is located on the 1936-1954 bypass alignment
of Route 66 at 2321 N. West Bypass.
One of the two stone duplex cottages is still standing next to the station.
This style of cabin was common in the 1930s and offered a welcome nights
rest to road weary travelers.

You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane
road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned
lanes are still there.
