John M. Barnes built this store in 1934 as J.M. Barnes & Son General Merchandise. The store also sold feed and later he added a Sinclair gas station and garage. x
The large furniture and appliance store were added later/

xIn the mid-1950s a hardware store was built across the street about the same time as the Phillips 66 gas station. Judging by the number of entrance doors the building appears to have been remodeled at some point.

x This former Phillips 66 gas station was built in 1956 across the street from the Barnes General Store. Many Phillips stations of the time had a large canopy over the pumps, if this one did, it's been obviously removed.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
