Bill & James Smith Sr. built the Red Cedar Inn in 1934 using logs cut from the family farm in Villa Ridge. Three generations of the Smith family ran the restaurant over the years. In 1935 a bar and a Mobil gas station was added. The bar was housed in the narrow section of the building, the wider section is the original restaurant. It is located East of town, about 1/2 mile east of the railroad tracks on Osage St.

x The sign on the building still had most of its neon tubing when this photo was taken in 2012. The business was closed in 1972 and reopened in 1987 but closed again in 2005. In 2003 it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. In 2011 it was a used car lot and was put up for sale in 2012. My understanding is that in 2017 the City of Pacific agreed to buy the property to be used as a visitor center and museum.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
