O.E. Carter & Ed Lawson opened a Phillips 66 gas station here in 1935.
They also sold Barnsdall Products here. They owned and operated the station
until 1950 when they moved their business to Phillipsburg. This was one
of three stations that they owned over the years. Probably the most notable
thing about the heavily remodeled building is the color of the roof, at
least in this 2016 photo. The service bay with the shed style roof on
the right in this photo is a later addition. The building is located on
Elm St. (Route 66) & Washington Ave.
Under other ownership this was still a gas station until 1971 when
the Elmore family moved their Orchard Hills Package Store into the building.
Their original 1946 location had also been on Route 66. The Elmore family
still runs the business.

You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane
road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned
lanes are still there.
