The former Gray Summit Hotel has stood here since 1855. It is on the original 1926 to 1933 alignment of Route 66, about 1/2 mile from the intersection with the later alignments.

GPS: 38.489887, -90.816865

According to the folks who owned it in 2022 this historic little hotel was built over a two year span from 1853 to 1855 using hand made bricks. So far it seems like it served as a hotel until about 1950 before becoming a Post Office and later housing an antique shop and other businesses before becoming a private residence.

The image above isn't great, it's just a screen grab from a dashcam video I made in 2016.

The owners in 2022 sent me this photo is from 1904. It's a little hard to make out but the lady on the right appears to have her hand on a baby carriage. In front of the door on the second floor you can get a peak at the pattern of the ornate railing.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
