The former Ross & Ruby's Diner eventually became the Cuba Route 66 Mercantile store. Ross & Ruby's operated a cafe here for thirty five years before 1980, when it became the Doughnut Hole. Gary and Terry Huges took over in 1986 and changed the name to the Route 66 Cafe which closed sometime after 2003. The space has changed owners several times becoming the Route 66 Cafe in the mid 1980s. In this 2012 photo the cafe was out of business and looked abandoned but it still had the original tile around the door and windows.

x The very colorful Route 66 Cafe sign was still hanging above the door when we took these photos in 2012. It's easy to find this building right next to the Hayes Shoe Store.

With the change to the Cuba Route 66 Mercantile store the old Route 66 Cafe sign gave way to a new for the new business.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
