In 1904 Peter Johnston died and left $5,000.00 to the town of Baxter Springs to be used for a new public library. In 1905 the town donated its 1872 city hall to be the home of the new library. After some remodeling the Johnston Public Library opened in September of 1907. The library was placed on the NRHP in 1976.

The Quantrell's Raid monument was placed by the local DAR in 1931.

Dedicated
in memory of
General James G. Blunt and his escort who,
defenseless, fell victims to the inhuman
ferocity of guerrillas, led by the infamous
Quantrell in his raid upon Baxter Springs
October 6th 1863, in which 135 Union soldiers
were slain and are now sleeping in the
Baxter Springs National Cemetery.

Erected by
Baxter Springs Chapter, Daughters of the
American Revolution.
October 1931

There is a Nez Perce Memorial and interpretive panel here which addresses the time when the Nez Perce Native American tribe were held prisoner and transported to Baxter Springs in 1878 for relocation.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
