East < GO > West

This park was one of the original rest stops on the old Route 66. When we were there in 2015 the rest area was divided by the removal of a bridge that was more or less in the middle of the space.

x The flag pole was dedicated in 1947 and rededicated in 1992 by VFW Post 3024 in memory of John J. Jerome.

The top plaque reads:

"PROUDLY WE PAY TRIBUTE TO THE MEMBERS OF OUR COMMUNITY WHO GAVE THEMSELVES IN SERVICE AND SACRIFICE FOR GOD AND COUNTRY"

The bottom plaque reds:

"Dedicated 1947
Rededicated November 14, 1992
In memory of
John J. Jerome
1902 - 1978
Post 3024
Sherman, Illinois"

To get to the park turn east on Andrew Rd from Sherman Rd then make an immediate left into the park. You can still see the north end of the the old rest area from the north bound lanes of Sherman Blvd.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
