Wilbur Fawns, Sr. purchased this Standard Oil Station in 1954 and worked here until he semi-retired in 1965. After that his son George ran the station until 1976 when I-55 was built. There used to be a huge "STANDARD" sign on the roof along the front of the building. It ran from the near corner to the space between the garage doors. That would have made it easily seen from Route 66 which ran right past the station. The 2023 photo above shows a new paint scheme compared to the 2015 photo below.

xThe building was pretty much surrounded by trucks when we snapped these photos. These appear to be old style overhead doors. The 1926 alignment went by the station on the right side in this photo, the 1941 alignment went by the left side. When I-55 opened in 1977 direct access to the station was cut off.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
