According to the notes on the Wayside Exhibit here the Ladd School Subway became necessary when traffic on Route 66 made crossing the street to get to school too dangerous for children.

Initially parents just asked for an island between the north and south bound lanes, instead they got a tunnel under the whole road. The tunnel entrances were sealed in 1945 after 66 was realigned to the new four lane road that bypassed this part of town.

The Ladd School is long gone and and the school site is now home to a church.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
