State Police Headquarters

East < GO > West

This was the first headquarters and barracks of the Illinois State Police in Pontiac. The building served that purpose until 1942 when the State Police moved to a new location south of town. This office covered the State Police District 6 which included a 75 mile section of the America's Main Street running from Dwight to McLean.

xThere is a Wayside Exhibit titled "Patrolling "Bloody 66" Hard Road Cops" in front of the building. That's a reference to the many tragic accidents that occurred on the early Mother Road. Two Illinois State Police officers that dealt with many of those accidents, Captain Francis Mowery and Lt. Chester Henry, have been inducted into the Illinois Route 66 Hall of Fame.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
