The Mt. Hope–Funks Grove Fire District was organized in 1937 and this firehouse was built in 1938. It would house a big new pumper truck and a smaller 1923 fire truck.

When the firehouse was new, and apparently for several years after, fire calls would go to the Dixie Truckers Home truck stop who would then call someone that lived near the street the firehouse who would run over to the water tower, where the fire siren was located, and cycle the siren on and off until the fire fighters all arrived.

xThe water tower next to the firehouse was built in 1935 using funds provided by the Works Progress Administration (WPA). Water for the new water tower was supplied by a deep well and pump house on a small triangle of land on the other side of Center Street. The tower has been out of service for years.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
