The Dixie Truck Stop has been here since 1928. The original family operated it until 2003. Starting as a simple sandwich shop in a roadside garage it has grown a lot through several expansion, remodeling, and then after a 1965 fire, a complete rebuild. At one time 6 cabins were added to the east side of the property for truckers to rest. Before the Illinois Route 66 Hall of Fame moved to Pontiac in 2004 it was located here.

x The sign says Dixie Truckers Home, but the business has also been known as the Dixie Truck Stop and Dixie Travel Plaza in recent years. In 2012 it was sold to Road Ranger and is a Pilot Travel Center. The original signs are still in place and the inside still honor Route 66.

x This sign still stands tall on I-55, exit 145. The truck stop and restaurant are located at Main St. and Dixie Rd (US 136). It looked a little tattered in this 2012 photo.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
