The Steak-N-Egger's in McCook was formerly Snuffy's 24 Hour Grill. Snafu's
was operated here from 1929 to 2011 when it was sold. I'm not sure it
was open 24 hours a day for all those years without any interruptions
though. Apparently the cool old Snuffy's neon sign disappeared from the
site about the same time that the place was sold.
The limestone used in the construction of the building came from the
nearby quarry that Route 66
used to cross but that has been bypassed since 1998.
Notice
that the "Welcome to Fabulous McCook" sign is similar
in style to the famous Welcome to Las Vegas sign. The McCook sign was
installed in 2013 and also features a Illinois US 66 shield at the top.

You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane
road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned
lanes are still there.
